Want an Easy Way to Improve Your Marketing as a Contractor?

As we have noted before, marketing is a key skill that can make or break your success as an independent licensed contractor in California. At the same time, though, it’s a part of the business that most contractors don’t truly enjoy, and don’t really understand.

You don’t have to be a marketing expert to attract new clients and projects, however. You just have to remember the things that make you want to work with another person or business. Usually, that isn’t expensive ads, celebrity endorsements, or even crazy prices – it’s a few important benefits that you can count on with a product or service.

Consider that, and keep the “golden rule of marketing” in mind: Talk about the things that matter to your customers, not the things you want to say.

How does that work in the real world? Here are a few quick tips:

Emphasize quality and value. Most people, when they evaluate contractors, just want someone who’s going to do a great job at a fair price. If you can convince them that you are that person, you’ll be hired very often. In construction, nothing is as important as great work finished on budget.

Stand behind your work with firm guarantees. If there is one thing people hate in any industry, it’s fine print. If you can make specific promises about the quality of your work, the price of your bids, and the time frame projects will take you to complete, you’ll develop the right kind of reputation.

Don’t be afraid to use simple words and ideas. It’s actually easier to destroy a good marketing piece with too many fancy words and headlines than it is to come up with something that’s entertaining and effective. The point is that you shouldn’t be afraid to use simple marketing messages, because they usually work best.

There are certainly a lot of things that can go into a successful marketing effort, especially as your California contracting business grows. As long as you remember to talk about things that matter to your clients, though, you’ll always have a leg up on the competition when it comes to finding new business.
