How to Verify a Subcontractor’s License Before Hiring Them

How to Verify a Subcontractor’s License Before Hiring Them

A subcontractor offers a fair price and says they can start Monday. Their proposal includes a license number, so everything seems ready. Before you reserve their place on the schedule, check what that number actually proves. As instructors preparing California contractors for licensure, we encourage this habit: verify before committing, not after a problem interrupts the job.

Match the License to the Business

Start with the CSLB Check a License lookup, which lets you search by license number, business name, or contractor’s name. Enter the number yourself rather than relying on a screenshot supplied with the estimate.

Compare the business information in the record with the proposed subcontract. CSLB’s license details identify the business name and entity type, helping you check whether the record matches the business you intend to hire. If something does not match, ask for an explanation before signing. A familiar face or strong referral should not replace this check.

Check Status and Classification

Look for a current and active license, then read the notices attached to the record rather than stopping at the status line. Treat verification as reviewing the whole record, not finding a reassuring phrase.

Next, compare the subcontract’s scope with CSLB’s classification descriptions, which define the work covered by different license classifications. For example, C–10 is the Electrical classification, with an official description covering electrical wiring, equipment, and related installations. Do not assume any active license automatically fits your project.

Review Bonds and Workers’ Compensation

Check the required $25,000 contractor bond or approved alternative recorded with CSLB. The bond benefits consumers harmed by defective construction or license law violations, and employees owed wages; it is not simply proof that a contractor carries liability insurance.

Workers’ compensation deserves a separate review. Contractors with employees need coverage, while eligible contractors without employees may file an exemption. However, C–8 Concrete, C–20 HVAC, C–22 Asbestos Abatement, C–39 Roofing, and C–61/D–49 Tree Service contractors must maintain coverage or valid self–insurance even without employees.

If an exemption appears but the subcontractor plans to bring employees, resolve that discrepancy before work starts. An exemption becomes invalid when the contractor hires someone subject to California’s workers’ compensation laws.

Save the Record and Check Again

Review any publicly disclosed complaint information, but understand its limits. Disclosure is restricted by law, and relevant information may not yet appear in CSLB’s database, so an empty complaint section does not establish a history without problems.

Save a dated copy of the license record with your subcontract documents. Recheck before work begins, especially if scheduling delays have created a gap between hiring and mobilization.

The main takeaway is simple: a license number starts the verification process; it does not finish it. Match the business, review status and scope, examine coverage records, and document what you checked before making the commitment.
